Where it all started
In the summer of 1947
A rancher discovered unidentifiable debris in his sheep pasture outside Roswell, New Mexico. Although officials from the local Air Force base asserted that it was a crashed weather balloon, many people believed it was the remains of an extraterrestrial flying saucer; a series of secret “dummy drops” in New Mexico during the 1950s heightened their suspicions. Nearly 50 years after the story of the mysterious debris broke, the U.S. military issued a report linking the incident to a top-secret atomic espionage project called Project Mogul. Still, many people continue to embrace the UFO theory, and hundreds of curiosity seekers visit Roswell and the crash site every year.

But, Roswell isn’t all about aliens. It is also the home of one of the largest cannabis organizations in the Southwest. Pecos Valley Production is a medical cannabis dispensary rooted in Roswell, New Mexico, with locations all over the state “serving you with compassion and excellence”. With 14 (soon to be 15) locations in New Mexico, Pecos Valley Production is growing fast and has close to 200 employees working for them. After visiting their facility several times, we can say without a doubt that PVP is gaining momentum and will be a key player in the recreational market, here in New Mexico.

Supporting other local dispensaries and giving patients options to the best available medicine, PVP even designates different months to spread awareness to various causes. All of this while producing their own cannabis year after year and improving on the process in ways that are both challenging and rewarding. Their most recent development includes a large-scale 40,000 square foot greenhouse facility alongside their existing 15,000 square foot facility. Not to mention several active indoor cultivation rooms. Perhaps the most impressive is their strides in their outdoor cultivation process, consisting of a 2000 quantity plant count on two acres of land.
The Greathouse family (owners and operators of Pecos Valley Production), at one time, were a family of dairy farmers. This industry requires just as much work and creativity as the Cannabis industry. It is a combination of hard work, long days, and the need to be familiar with the constantly evolving sciences of crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and cow health to those unfamiliar with dairy farming. This includes maintaining the best possible environmental conditions for the animals as well as animal nutrition. A dairy farmer also needs to be familiar with waste management, and the Greathouse family are firm believers of using composting for nutrient recycling. Although the Greathouse family was unfamiliar with the Cannabis industry “ins and outs,” they have managed to open 14 retail locations throughout New Mexico while maintaining a large loyal patient following.
This is not the first time dairy farmers have been linked to the Cannabis industry, despite what you may think. In 2019, the cottage cheese brand Muuna (now defunct) pranked its customers on April Fools’ Day with an artificial flavor: Muuna Cannabis cottage cheese. Not too long after Muu- na’s prank — in May 2019 — ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s announced a commitment to include cannabidiol (CBD) in its ice cream innovations. The company said it intended to make CBD-infused ice cream available once CBD is legalized at the federal level.
PVP has been expanding its facilities over the past year to cultivate enough cannabis for the medical program and contribute to the overall health of the New Mexico Cannabis industry. The owners and directors of the company have been donating and giving back to the community from their earnings through various foundations like Presbyterian Pediatric Oncology, Make-a-Wish New Mexico, Veterans Organizations, Anita Salas Foundation, Department of Health and Vitalant. We are very excited to see what the future holds for the New Mexico Cannabis Industry and how PVP will fit into this space.
